FAQs

How does the program work?

Healthy Runner Strength is a self-paced 12-week or 16-week step-by-step video/spreadsheet training program focused on IMPLEMENTING life-changing run specific workouts to improve your strength and confidence for your running.

The first 6 weeks you will build your foundation and the second 6 weeks you will learn a new routine of exercises to continue progressing your strength all the while keeping things fresh along the way!

We have videos of the individual exercises, introduction preview videos of each workout, and full length pre-recorded videos to do the workouts with me coaching you through!

We have spreadsheets and clickable exercise video links guiding you through a self paced workout providing structure and taking the guesswork out of what exercises you should be doing on which days.

What is covered in the workouts?

I am 100% focused on helping you get stronger as a runner so you can continue pounding the pavement doing what you love.

This program will guide you to implement run specific exercises to adopt a new level of confidence and strength with your running.

Next, I'll help you understand the importance of implementing strength exercises into your training so you can take control over your health as a runner.

Each workout will include a 5 minute dynamic warmup, foam rolling exercises for your top 5 running muscles, 60 minute total body strength based workout, and stretching exercises to cool down.

This is a no-judgement, no-excuses program, centered on moving you toward complete control of your health regardless of where you're starting.

How much time will this take each week?

About 3-4 hours/week for 12 weeks.  You will do 3 workouts per week and each will take 60-90 minutes to complete.

However, this is a self-paced program, so you can absolutely break up some of the workouts to do shorter and or longer sessions.  You can even skip the warm up or the the cool down if you need to run to work (though I don't recommend that but have done so myself when pressed for time)

Don't have time to workout 3 days a week and run?  No problem!  I have many of my runners get the same results with doing the program 2x/week.

Since there are 3 different distinct workouts for each phase, I would just rotate through the three of them each time you workout.

Duane, I have never worked out before, can I still join?

Absolutely.  The first half of the program is focused on building your foundation and will get your strength dialed in like you never experienced.

I also provide you options for each exercise to make it harder or easier depending on your level of fitness.

The workouts will be challenge for you  whether you are a beginner or have been exercising in the gym for 20 years like myself.

You may even come out of it with some ideas of how to shake up your current workout routine that you've been wanting to do for years...

I just started running, should I wait to be more experienced before starting?

No, actually the best time to start a strength training program is before or at the start of your running journey!

Strength training bullet proofs your body to tolerate the demands of running as you increase your mileage.

By doing the exercises in this program you will build up your running muscles and help prevent the common running injuries I see all the time in my clinic.

What equipment do I need? Do I need to go to a gym?

Not much!  These workouts were designed to be done in your home but you can also do them in a gym.

If you can get your hands on a pair of lighter dumbells and 1 heavier dumbell or kettlebell that will be helpful.  However, as you will see in the videos, I have been creative and used a Home Depot bucket and filled it with bricks as well as using a maul axe as a kettlebell since I couldn't get my hands on one at the onset of COVID during the BETA program last spring.

Other equipment that I would recommend is a foam roller, set of resistance tubing with handles, exercise miniband (for those important hip muscles), and a yoga or exercise ball.

If you do not have one of these pieces of equipment that is o.k. I give you options to do alternative exercises.

I also give you options if you have access to a pullup bar, TRX straps, and a "Reebok" Step.

The key to getting stronger as a runner is leveraging your body weight as resistance and training on one leg (like you are when you run)... This will add a SPARK to your muscles and improve your confidence and strength for your runs so you legs won't feel so heavy.

I am just getting over an injury or surgery, when should I start?

You can start whenever you feel you can do some type of exercise.  I would defer to your specific medical provider to find out what not to do.

Depending on what body part is injured, this program will actually help you get back to running sooner.

These are the exercises I give my runners when they are injured with the necessary modifications during our physical therapy sessions.

For example, if you had a stress fracture or plantar fasciitis in your foot then all the upper body, core, and hip exercises would be great to do while your foot is healing.  This will help keep your total body fitness up as well as your mental sanity!

I am terrible with technology, will I be able to do this?

Yes!  I will walk you step by step through everything to get started.  You've got this!

Can my spouse/significant other join in with me?

Absolutely.  I HIGHLY encourage you to through this program with a workout buddy to keep you accountable.  There's no additional cost to have your spouse/ significant other or even your kids join in on getting healthy.

Can I invite a friend or other family member to join?

I'd be honored if you'd invite your friends/ other family members not living in your house to go on this journey with us.

Please feel free to send them the link to this page.  All I am asking is that all friends/ family (other than those in your household) sign up individually.

What happens after the 12 weeks are over?

You'll get ongoing access to the course, and all materials.

I can't afford $297 right now, but I REALLY need this, do you have any payment plans?

Yes! I've added a 3-month payment plan (see the top of this page) to make it an easy choice.

If you're in a spot where you truly can't afford this right now based on the crazy circumstances we're in, I want to help.

I've set aside a few spots for people who are in dire circumstances.

Please reach out to me in Facebook Messenger and we'll make it happen.

What's your refund policy

I'll give you a full week (3 workouts) to try out the program. If you decide it's not for you, I'll be happy to give you a full refund. Just send an email to duane@sparkhealthyrunner.com and we'll get you taken care of.

“Fellow runners!  Just want to say if you're worried about losing running fitness, you should really consider joining Dr. Duane Scotti's home workout program he is offering.  I've found the exercises/workouts a great addition to my running, incorporating foam rolling, stretches, plyometrics...something I never did regularly but I know I should do!  So positive that once races return, I'll be injury free and stronger!”

Lufeng Zou

"I was grateful that I joined Duane’s special online home fitness program during this pandemic, while the races are cancelled and outdoor runs are more limited. These programs are GREAT which covers different aspects including foam-rolling, mobility, stability, stretching and strengthening, so it’s a comprehensive package and a perfect hit for runners and active adults! Especially for runners who don’t do cross training or hate lifting weights (a vast majority lol).
Many runners hate lifting weights but that’s the essential way to prevent injury. I've been lifting weights and doing yoga before the running so I have a better understanding of the reason behind his workouts, making me more appreciate that Duane's workout are well designed for runners! That's why I highly recommend Duane's program, which made it less intimidating and even fun and enjoyable to get stronger 💪"

Crystal McPherson

"I wanted to let you know I had the most AMAZING RUN that I have had in a while, and definitely since COVID 19!
I ran 4 miles, three of which were all well under my usual pace. I had my fastest mile to date in mile two. This was without any intervals. Just a quick out and back!

Can I just say at one point during the run I realized that my legs were so much stronger and moving in a pace and manner that I am so not used to! It’s sort of like the workouts have my body in a place where my mind hasn’t caught up to yet. It’s getting there though!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!! I know I have put the work in, but you have truly given the tools, guidance and faith in all of the improvements which come from the work we are doing! It has meant more than o could possibly convey in words! I I’ll be there for your next program for sure!!!"
